School administrators are expected to demonstrate a high level of excellence in every area of education, providing great leadership, communicating effectively, making strategic decisions, and building relationships with diverse stakeholders. RAA offers new school administrators multiple, hands-on opportunities to expand and refine existing skills and to sharpen decision-making abilities. The program focuses on exploring methods to transcend challenges faced by educators working to ensure student success. Program faculty will offer multiple perspectives on effective leadership while highlighting the value of coaching and mentoring and the importance of maintaining balance between personal and professional life.
An engaging, motivating and empowering program, participants will:
Taught in four cohort sessions, learning will be facilitated through subject area experts, readings, small group discussions, role play, and voice of experience conversations with current and retired administrators and superintendents. Each participant will be charged with identifying and interacting with a mentor/coach. Final products will include a personal vision statement and a reflective journal synopsis based on their total program experience that identifies new awareness of their roll and the application of what has been learned. Contact hours that may be applied to recertificate will be awarded upon completion of the program and assignments.

Offered by the Virginia Tech Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement (COTA), in partnership with the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS) and the Virginia Tech School of Education, this program focuses on exploring and developing the relevant skills, knowledge and commitment needed to succeed as a superintendent. Emphasis is placed on providing a realistic overview of the complexity of the superintendent role. Program faculty will offer multiple perspectives on effective leadership and highlight the value of coaching and mentoring as an important link between academic and practical preparation for the job.
An intensive, interactive and results-oriented program, ASP participants will:
Learning will be facilitated through readings, small group discussions; voice of experience conversations with seated and retired superintendents; simulations; mock interviews; and analyses of case studies. Each participant will be charged with identifying and interacting with a mentor/coach. Final products will include an entry plan for the first 90 days on the job as a superintendent and a reflective journal synopsis based on their total program experience that identifies new awareness of the superintendent’s role and the application of what has been learned. Contact hours that may be applied to recertification will be awarded upon completion of the program and assignments.

The Aspiring Superintendents Program (ASP) is a three-seminar, cohort opportunity designed specifically for principal, central office, and executive level leaders who aspire to become a school district superintendent.
